Blog the Blogger: The Anti-DC

Don't let the blog's name fool you: The Anti-DC isn't as bitingly sarcastic and cynical as it sounds, dear readers. Okay, actually it is. Marissa dishes it out - and takes it from her readers - on topics as varied as reality television, hipsters, and Pee-Wee Herman. But she has a serious weakness for fashion and style, capturing the street style (or lack thereof) of D.C. denizens with righteous aplomb. And a blog posting earlier this year on D.C.'s fashion bloggers set off a creative firestorm of responses that are still amusing to read. Forthwith, Marissa answers to the DCGF's soon-to-be Famous Five (plus One) questions...

1. What is the first article of clothing you remember that you loved to wear? My earliest memory of really and truly *loving* an item of clothing happened when I was in fifth grade. I had a pair of tapered white Guess jeans with ankle zippers handed down to me from the daughter of my parents' friends. They were too big on me for about a year, but I wore them anyway. If I was still a size 12 girls, I'd be wearing them right now. No joke. I'm not sure whether to be depressed that the circle of my fashion life has already been completed or rejoice in that, apparently, I will be wearing the same pants I'm wearing right now when I'm 85.

2. We all know and love Goodwill [I know you do, Marissa! -the DCGF], but where is your other favorite place to shop for a fashion bargain in the DC area? For a real bargain I beg my coworker with a car to take me out to this ridiculously large thrift store in Virginia called Unique. Last time I was there I got a barely used brown (albeit fake leather) over-sized '80s shoulder bag and, even better, I found what might be the best item I've *ever* procured in a thrift store -- a wide black patent leather belt with a huge gold and rhinestone buckle shaped like an elephant's head. [See above, right.] Total cost: $12 for both.

3. Where is your favorite place to shop for a fashion bargain outside of DC? This is a hard one, since I'm tempted to say street markets around the world. However, since unfortunately I'm not jet-setting as often as I might like to be, I don't think I can consider random developing-world street markets my "favorite," per se. (Although, if you ever happen to find yourself in Tbilisi, Georgia, they have one of the tightest street markets in the Eastern Bloc). Instead, I guess I'd have to say my bargain-loving heart will always belong at least a little to the original Filene's Basement in downtown Boston (although it's temporarily moved to Newbury Street while the original Downtown Crossing location gets remodeled). Other Filene's Basements have nothing on the original. I honestly don't think I've ever left that place empty-handed. When I was there in February, I picked up a pair of $265 Ya-Ya wool trousers for $20. *sigh*

4. Who is your current favorite designer? This is a tough one as I tend to favor individual pieces over entire collections, however, as of late, I've really been into what David Neville and Marcus Wainwright of Rag & Bone are doing -- that sort of androgynous, mod tight pants'n'cardigan look. A couple months ago I found a ridiculously awesome pair of Rag & Bone navy blue skinny tuxudo pants with black trim down the side on sale at ShopBop.com. They're the only pair of pants I own for which I actually follow the washing instructions. I don't ever want to harm them. I plan on turning these into an heirloom to be passed down to the next generation.

5. If you could own any single item from fashion past or present - money is no object! - what would it be? Wow. I scoured every inch of my underused brain to come up with something less embarrassing, but I have to admit that the only fashion item I am dying to own is the Putin t-shirt designed by Russian designer Denis Simachev. It's just such a fabulously ridiculous statement on Russia and Moscow, in particular, which I love to hate to love. I'm so predictable...

Bonus Question: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? As the ever-intrepid journalist that I am, I went out and bought some Tootsie Pops, planning to really find out. However, being the ever-impatient human being that I am, I bit in around lick 24 or so. Damn.

Twenty-four licks - that's the closest we've gotten to the truth so far, Marissa, so big ups to you. As for that Putin t-shirt...um...it's very...uh...flowered. Yes. That's it. Thanks for your insight, Marissa. Dosvedanya.
