Roberto Cavalli for H&M

High street-designer mania is not settling by any stretch of imagination; while the Josh Goot hysteria at Target yesterday was mildly busy, Swedish chain store H&M today declares the rumours of an H&M cooperation with Roberto Cavalli.

“Fancy yourself as a Cavalli babe next winter – for next to nothing? The Italian designer most famous for dressing Gwyneth, Madonna, BeyoncĂ© and Jennifer Lopez is next up to design a one-off collection for H&M – following sell-out-in-seconds collections from Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Viktor & Rolf. "Roberto Cavalli has created a world of his own, iconic and full of fantasy, when it comes to colours, prints, and style," says H&M creative director, Margareta van der Bosch. "There is no place for shyness and no possibility of ending up with a mainstream wardrobe of everyday basics. The Roberto Cavalli collections represent an exuberant, successful lifestyle."

If it's Madewell it has to be good

Madewell, is one of those brands offering cute, effortlessly chic basics at reasonable prices. What isn't as widely known is that it is an offshoot of J. Crew purveyor of effortlessly preppy-chic-ish basics at semi reasonable prices. Though J. Crew is not mentioned in the company history customers are assured of the quality they can expect...the (original) company was founded in 1937! They made quality work wear! In other words, we are the real deal, buy our cute tank tops!
Whatever the real back story, from a company founded on the legs of a lesser known Carhart or Dickies, you can expect un-fashion made fashionable like this hobo/messenger bag.

There really aren't any good detail shots on the site (maybe that too is part of the "too cool" authentic niche..."sure we have a website, but you can't see anything that well, and you have to call us to buy anything"...sort of a web equivalent of a pretty, but inattentive sales person) so these will have to suffice.
What I like is that this seems to be the sort of bag I have been looking for. A sort of un-messenger messenger bag. A large hobo that can easily be worn cross body, but doesn't look like a guys bag, or something for school.

Made from leather, in at least 2 colors, I feel like it will be decent quality for what it is (based on parent brand J.Crew's history) and serve the purpose of a day bag that leaves 2 hands free, and alleviates the one shoulder slump from a traditional shoulder bag. the bag has a lived in quality, the leather looking softly wrinkled and worn in...almost like it's been washed. There is an outer zipper pocket, as well as side pockets, and the strap can be adjusted for length.
You can see the Old School Hobo (and other looks) on Madewell1937, and if you like what you see, it can be ordered for a very reasonable sounding $198 by calling 866-544-1937.

Fare the well.

This blog has gotten a bit stale.

A lot has happened to me since I last posted here and it's been a bit eye-opening.

I've decided there's more to life than clothes, and I needed a fresh start. I'll still read my favorite blogs from time to time, and this has been a fun experience in general. I love you fellow fashion bloggers. :]

If you're still interested in what I'm up to, mosey on over to: http://scaarika.livejournal.com/

Toodles.

Giraffe Style at Kiyonna

Everyone knows I love Kiyonna, although I wish they'd start making their OX a little bit smaller - damn thing about having an hourglass figure when you lose weight is that your body gets thrown off balance - I am tiny on top but I'm still packing some serious heat in the booty, hips and thighs. But I digress.... they've got this new pattern that I love, and the pattern hides the fact that my boobs are a little too small to be wearing it, lolllll! It's this cute Giraffe pattern, more modern and less cliche than something like leopard for the plus gal. Check it out:

Babydoll Tee: $56
Wrap Dress: $116

Oh and FYI, here's a few ways to save money if you want to go shop Kiyonna:

Free ground shipping on orders over $85 with code SUMMER85

$20 off orders of $150 or more with code SUMMER2007

Caribbean Hook Bracelets

The Caribbean Hook Bracelet first became popular on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands to celebrate love and good fortune. Recently, the islands of the Caribbean have adopted the Hook Bracelet as their signature piece. The traditional horseshoe design was introduced to the Caribbean over forty years ago, and since then, new island bracelet designs have become very popular, including the Fish Hook, Knot, Lizard, and Dolphin and many others. Caribbean Hook Bracelets are now worn by people all over the world.

Original Caribbean Hook Bracelets

Whether you call it a Love Bracelet, or an Island Bangle, there is only one Original Hook Bracelet with a patented integral locking clasp. Sterling Silver with 14k Gold wrap.

Handcrafted gold and sterling silver hook bracelets are made in the Caribbean and have a unique style all their own. Folklore has built up around the bracelet's simple horseshoe design. If you wear the open end of the hook pointed up toward your heart, it means your love is taken, and that good fortune will come your way. If you wear the hook away from your heart, it signifies that you are available, and that you're sharing your good fortune.

Sand Dollar Hook Bracelets

Children have been known to say that sand dollars are the money of mermaids washed-up from the deep. This stunning sterling silver bracelet with 14k gold wrap and sand dollar will remind you of the times spent trolling the sandy shores searching for the shells of these delicate sea creatures.

Folklore

Sometimes the men of a Caribbean village have to leave to fish or deliver goods to other islands in order to make a living for their families, often for weeks at a time. When the men set out to sea, their wives wear their bracelets with the open end of the hook pointed away from their heart and down their out stretched arms, sending love and faith as they wave goodbye to their husbands. When the men return and their ship is spotted in the harbor, their wives turned the hook up toward their heart, symbolizing the safe return of their men from the dangers of the Caribbean.

Gemstones and Hearts!

Valentine's Day is creeping up on us, and I'm still listing jewelry pieces with hearts. I have gemstone hearts I should use, but I've lately been involved with the lampwork hearts that you see here. My favorite necklace with a heart is probably the one (close-up is above) I made with lampwork beads from Lynn Nurge, genuine rubies, and goldfilled beads and charms. The rubies are a generous size, nice and chunky, and the goldfilled components match the flecks of gold in these dichroic beads. Instead of graduating rubies until they were smaller and smaller, or keeping them all large (and thus making a very expensive necklace), I decided to make the ruby part of the necklace like a "collar" and join it to large-linked goldfilled chain. This ruby necklace will be a great Valentine's Day present for someone.
I bought several of these silvery pink Venetian hearts because I was so taken by the colour, the light pink laced with such a clear silvery shimmer. I liked the heart so much that I decided to keep it the star by hanging it from pink suede and adding only a touch of silver and a little faceted amethyst rondelle to the bottom. This lampwork pendant necklace can be found on the same page as the lampwork pendant necklace seen below, another heart pendant, this time from Annie Divelbiss. It, too, is laced with silver; the colours are different tones of blue-purple, and it hangs from a pretty imprinted sterling silver chain from the Karen Hill Tribes of Thailand. I've left most of the chain so that the buyer can wear it about 27 inches or have it shortened to wear as a choker.

Today we had the first snow of the year - or I should say the season, since we had no snow either in December or November. It was a wet, sleety snow, just enough to make driving difficult for drivers who aren't used to driving on slick roads and give shivers to the rest of us. How wonderful it would be to have about 6 inches of soft, powdery snow to look beautiful for a day or so, then melt away. How can it be winter without any snow?

Home Sweet Designer-Clad Home

I have admit a certain pang of jealousy when I discovered that my friend in college (who had the cool dorm room with the built in kitchenette) had replaced all of his standard-issue white sheets with Calvin Klein bedding. Being the home furnishings novice that I was - I believe She-Ra sheets had still been in heavy rotation on my bed throughout high school - the world of designer bedding, towels, and furniture was still a new thing to me.

I mean
, sure, I knew that Guess made robes and stuff with the tiny triangles on it, but who knew that I could get my teapot from Calvin and, more recently, my side table from Giorgio Armani? Heck, even Marc Jacobs jumped on the bandwagon, collaborating with Waterford on beautiful items for the tabletop. Forthwith, a few a my favorites and their sartorial counterparts. Then, my wish list of designers and the objects for the home I'd love to see them create.

Calvin Klein's dinnerware exhibits a sparse modernity that is readily apparent in all of the brand's clothes. The clean lines and simple designs are reminiscent of the designers accessories: bold yet understated, classic yet modern, luxurious yet accessible. Notice how the inside of the bowl reflects the light in the same way the sides of the open-toe pumps do? Both would look perfect in a home full of warm earth tones and cool stainless steel accents.

Plus, Klein's home collection is relatively affordable. The rice bowl in this collection starts at just $10 and the mug will set you back on $11.25. And - if you're astute about your shopping choices - you can often find these collections on sale. Not so for the next two...

Marc Jacobs' on the other hand is more often on the cutting edge of fashion, a harbinger of what every other wannabe designer will be copying for seasons to come. He's unafraid to experiment with color, texture, fabric, and exaggerated silhouettes, which is why his Jean Footed Decanter for Waterford is such a perfect accompaniment to his silver lurex skirt!

Think about it: both have linear graphic detail and lend a bit
of an edge to a more traditional look. And both are incredibly expensive: $400 for the decanter and $995 for the skirt. I recommend you get both.

And how about Armani/Casa? Giorgio's foray into the home furnishings department hasn't been quite as interesting, in my humble opinion, but his current collection features the Tommy "G" and "A" tables, which I think are just smashing, especially if either of those happen to be your own initials. Oh wait! "G" is for Goodwill! Do you think I could write off the $735 plus shipping as a reasonable business expense? Maybe if it was in blue...

I'd like to think the tables' dark brown lacquer finish could have been inspired by the men's brown woven leather
jacket to the right. It probably wasn't, but the model is adorable, no? Si.

And now for the designers I like to see in home furnishings and the products at which they'd excel:

1. Viktor & Rolf: shower curtains

2. John Galliano for Christian Dior: ceiling fans

3. Junya Watanabe: mini-blinds

4. Betsey Johnson: feather dusters

5. Thom Browne: oven mitts
